How to Register a Trademark in India, Step by Step

1. Search your brand name on the IP India public search for similar marks in your class. 2. Find your class (class 25 for clothing, 14 for jewellery, 3 for cosmetics, and so on). 3. File form TM-A online with the documents and the government fee for each class. 4. You get an application number the same day and can start using ™ with your brand.

5. The Registry examines the application and may raise an objection, which you answer in writing. 6. Once accepted, it is published in the Trade Marks Journal, where anyone can oppose it for four months. 7. With no opposition, the mark is registered, you get the certificate and can use ®. Registration lasts 10 years and can be renewed.
