What a GST Invoice Format Must Have
Under the GST invoice rules, a tax invoice needs the seller’s name, address and GSTIN, a unique invoice number and date, the buyer’s name and address (and GSTIN if registered), the place of supply, and for each item the description, HSN or SAC code, quantity, unit, value and taxable value. It then shows the GST rate and amount, split into CGST and SGST within the same state or IGST between states, and whether reverse charge applies, with the authorised signatory.
This page gives you that GST invoice format as a form. Fill it in and the A4 PDF is laid out for you, with a tax summary for each rate, round-off and the total in words, such as One Lakh Twenty Five Thousand.
No Excel or Word Template Needed
An Excel or Word GST invoice format breaks easily: a formula gets overwritten, a state is wrong, or the IGST split is missed. Here the tax is worked out from your state and the place of supply, the GSTIN is checked for format, state code and check digit, and long invoices continue on more pages with the table header repeated. Your details are saved in your browser for the next invoice.
Frequently asked questions
Can I download the GST invoice format in Excel or Word?
This tool makes a PDF, not an Excel or Word file. You fill the format on the page and download a finished A4 PDF.
Is HSN code mandatory on a GST invoice?
Yes, for most sellers: 4 digits up to ₹5 crore turnover and 6 digits above, on B2B invoices. Check the rule for your turnover with your CA.
When is IGST used instead of CGST and SGST?
