GST Number Verification

Type a GSTIN to see if it is Active, Cancelled or Suspended — with legal and trade name, business type, registration date, jurisdiction and address from the GST registry.

GST Number Verification Online

Before you buy from a new supplier, sell to a B2B customer or claim input tax credit, check that their GST number is real and active. Type the 15-character GSTIN above and this GST number verification tool first checks the format, the state code and the check digit — so typing mistakes are caught instantly — and then reads the GST registry for the full details.

You see whether the GSTIN is Active, Cancelled or Suspended, the legal name and trade name, the constitution of business (proprietorship, partnership, private limited…), whether the taxpayer is Regular or Composition, the date of registration (and cancellation, if any), the principal place of business with pincode, and the state and centre jurisdiction.

How to read a GSTIN

The first two digits of a GSTIN are the state code (10 is Bihar, 27 Maharashtra, 07 Delhi). The next ten characters are the PAN of the business, and the 6th character of the GSTIN tells you who holds that PAN — P for an individual or proprietor, C for a company, F for a firm or LLP. The 13th character counts registrations under the same PAN in that state, the 14th is usually Z, and the last one is a check digit worked out from the first fourteen.

A cancelled or suspended GSTIN should not be charged GST on an invoice, and input tax credit on its bills can be refused, so it is worth verifying every new GST number.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cancelled GSTIN still valid on an invoice?

No. A business whose GST registration is cancelled cannot charge GST, and buyers can lose input tax credit on such invoices.

Where does the data come from?

From the GST registry (GSTN), read through an authorised GST data service. The status is refreshed at least once a day.

Why does it say the GSTIN doesn’t add up?

The last character of a GSTIN is a check digit. If any character is mistyped the check digit no longer matches, so the number cannot be a real GSTIN.
