Documents Needed to Sell Online

Type your product and see if you need a trademark and GST, the tax rate, licences like FSSAI and BIS, and documents for Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho.

What You Need to Sell a Product Online in India

Every marketplace seller needs a PAN, a bank account and a pickup address. Amazon and Flipkart ask for a GSTIN, except for books. Meesho also accepts an Enrolment ID or UIN if you have no regular GST, but under Notification 34/2023 that route means no sales to other states, one state only, and turnover below the GST limit.

What changes by product is the licence. Food needs FSSAI, even when you only resell. Phones, power banks, LED lamps, Bluetooth speakers and other products on the BIS Compulsory Registration list need BIS registration. Type your product to see what applies, with the GST rate from its HSN code.

Do You Need a Trademark to Sell Online?

No law requires a trademark, but marketplaces can. Sellers report that Flipkart will not take many items live without one, and listing under a brand on Flipkart needs brand approval. Amazon Brand Registry needs a registered or applied-for trademark. Meesho lets you list as unbranded, but your own brand name needs proof. If you sell another company’s brand, keep the owner’s authorisation letter.

Frequently asked questions

Is a trademark mandatory to sell on Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho?

No law requires one. Flipkart often asks for it, especially to list under a brand. Amazon needs one for Brand Registry, and Meesho needs brand proof for your own brand name, though you can list as unbranded.

What must be on a food packet?

The FSSAI logo and licence number, veg or non-veg logo, nutrition details, ingredients, manufacture or packing date, expiry or use-by date, plus MRP, net quantity, and the maker’s name and address.

Can I sell on Meesho without GST?

Meesho accepts an Enrolment ID or UIN in place of a GSTIN. Under Notification 34/2023 you cannot sell to other states, and your turnover must stay below the GST limit.

Do I need GST to sell books?

Amazon and Flipkart treat books separately: Amazon offers a tax-exempted option at registration, and Flipkart’s GSTIN requirement excludes books.

Which products need BIS?

BIS lists them under its Compulsory Registration Scheme, including mobile phones, power banks, power adaptors, LED lamps, smart watches, Bluetooth speakers and wireless earphones. Other products can fall under separate Quality Control Orders.

Is this legal advice?

No. It is a guide. Confirm with the marketplace and your CA, because rules change.
