Volumetric Weight Formula

The volumetric weight formula for courier and transport, with worked examples and a calculator that applies it to your box.

Volumetric Weight Formula for Courier

Volumetric weight (kg) = length × breadth × height in cm ÷ 5000. This is the formula most Indian couriers and Meesho, Flipkart and Amazon use. Some surface services divide by 4000, which makes the volumetric weight higher, and air cargo divides by 6000.

Example: a box of 25 × 20 × 15 cm is 7500 cubic cm. 7500 ÷ 5000 = 1.5 kg. If the box actually weighs 0.6 kg, the courier charges 1.5 kg, because the chargeable weight is the bigger of the actual and the volumetric weight.

In inches the same formula is L × B × H ÷ 305 (because 5000 cubic cm is about 305 cubic inches). A 12 × 10 × 8 inch box is 960 ÷ 305 = 3.15 kg, charged as 3.5 kg on a 0.5 kg slab.

Volumetric Weight Formula for Transport (CFT)

Truck and train transporters use cubic feet: CFT = L × B × H in inches ÷ 1728, and volumetric weight = CFT × kg per CFT, usually 6. A 24 × 18 × 12 inch carton is 3 CFT, or 18 kg at 6 kg per CFT.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for volumetric weight?

L × B × H in cm ÷ 5000 for courier; L × B × H in inch ÷ 1728 × kg per CFT for transport.

Why divide by 5000?

It is the space-to-weight ratio couriers set: 5000 cubic cm of space counts as 1 kg.

Which weight is charged?

The higher of the actual and the volumetric weight.
